action film conventons
we can see these conventions being used in most action films such as the dark knight when harvey dents wife gets blown up..also these conventions are used in all james bond films ever made
PS ilove you oppening scene
In the opening of the romantic comedy “P.S,I love you”, we can tell that it is a romantic
comedy because of the background music
is quiet and actually says the words “I love you”. The audience can also tell
that this is a romantic comedy because the first scene shows a man apologizing
to a woman like they are close friends or a couple. we know that the man and women in this scene are the main characters because the camera is focused on them for a long time in this scene we can tell the setting of the film is in the city because of the clothing e.g.the man is wherein a shirt which indicates that he is from a urban environment
goodfellas opening
In the opening scene to the film “Goodfellas”, we can instantly
tell what kind of film it will be because of their stereotypical gangster voices.
Also the fact they have various weapons in this scene also tells us that the film
includes violence (which is a convention of the genre) . From the opening we can also tell who the main characters
are because the camera is focused on these 3 men for the whole opening scene
when the 3 men are in the car the camera man has not made
any unnecessary changes to the camera
angle , by doing this he has created a relationship between the characters and
the audience so now the audience are focused on these 3 characters ( mainly the
man in the drivers seat)
the audience can also tell that this is a film about the
mafia because the words “new York 1970” appear on the screen , this is
significant because many people know that in new York at the time there was a
large drug trade involving many different gangs.
The car the men were driving would have been extremely
expensive at the time so we know that they are probably successful with their business. this makes the audience want to be more like these men.
this scene conforms to the stereotype that men are violent
and reckless because there is a death and weapons are used.it also follows some
of the conventions of action films because we are meant to look at the 3 men in
the front of the car for a long time and the audience is supposed to feel
closest to them so they act as a good and main role whereas the person in the
boot of the car is only on it for a few seconds so the audience don’t have long
to sympathise with them. also because the man in the boot of the car isn’t American
and the film was set in USA it makes the audience feel less sympathy for him
the target audience for this film would be 18 to 25 year olds we can tell this because there are guns and violence and a death in the first opening scene of the film

saw oppening scene
the name of the film( saw) tells the audience that this may be a horror film because a saw could be a tall used to hack off dead body parts
In the opening to the horror film saw the producers use an
interesting font of writing to make the film seem like more of a drama then a
horror. The producers do this so the audience feel like what they are about to watch
isn’t going to be 100% blood and gore.
The film does use a lot of conventions for horror films such
as when the light gets turned on it shows the man from a slightly high angle
shot. This is so we feel like the man is small week and unprotected the audience can also tell that this is a horror film the moment we see a dead man on the floor coverd in blood, this shows the audience that there is a villian because someone has been killed
the scene is filmed in an old dirty room that looks as if it could of been a toilet before.this is interesting because it shows the audience that this room is unused and hidden away from society
because all the screen time in the opening is focusing on this one person that is locked in the the room makes the audience simpathise with him
the target audience for this film would be 18 year olds and above we can tell this from the opening because there is a dead person covered in blood in the first scene. if this film was a 12 it may have the actor look at the floor and seem disgusted and then show the body from an extreme long shot so the audience doesnt see much detail of the body
